Romania Tops EU Inflation Chart for Eighth Month

Romania has maintained its position as the European Union country with the highest annual inflation rate in August 2026, according to data from Eurostat. The Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices recorded an annual inflation rate of 6.3% for Romania.

This is a significant decline compared to July's 8.2%, but still higher than the EU average. Across the European Union, annual inflation rose from 3% in July to 3.2% in August, while the euro area saw an increase from 2.9% to 3.2%. Lithuania and Cyprus followed Romania with inflation rates of 5.6% and 5.2%, respectively.

The lowest annual inflation rates were reported in Sweden, Estonia, and Czechia. The Eurostat data highlights the ongoing challenges faced by European economies due to rising prices and changing consumer spending habits.
