Romanian Leu Crashes to Historic Low Amid Economic Instability
The Romanian leu has hit a historic low of 5.2788 lei to the euro, as the country's economic instability deepens.
This decline is not just an isolated incident but rather the result of a deliberate policy by the National Bank of Romania (BNR) to stabilize the currency through massive interventions in the foreign exchange market.
The leu has been 'forcibly stabilized' for years, and now its purchasing power relative to the euro has eroded due to higher inflation rates compared to the euro area average.
Furthermore, the BNR's efforts to control the exchange rate have exhausted its foreign exchange reserves, forcing it to let the leu weaken gradually to avoid depleting the country's resources.
