Romania's President Announces Euro Adoption Agreement Amid Economic Challenges
Romania's president Nicusor Dan unexpectedly announced that there is a 'political agreement' on adopting the euro as the country's national currency. This comes after Romania's centrist parties failed to agree on a new government following a partly failed attempt by the Social Democrats to overthrow Liberal Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan.
The president stated that the future government, along with the National Bank of Romania (BNR), will draw up a roadmap for adopting the euro. He emphasized that this agreement is part of a broader agreement on key national priorities, which also includes maintaining the financial trajectory assumed by Romania and drafting the 2027 budget.
Romania has been working towards joining the eurozone since February 2026, with President Dan reaffirming the country's objective of meeting the criteria for adopting the euro within the next 3-4 years. However, according to the Convergence Report for 2026, Romania only meets one criterion regarding the level of public debt but misses all other necessary economic conditions.
