Rupee Edges Up on RBI Intervention Amid Global Headwinds
The Indian rupee opened at 95.90 against the US dollar on Friday, September 25, marking a slight gain of 6 paise compared to Thursday's close of 95.96.
According to traders cited by Reuters, the Reserve Bank of India likely sold dollars before the local spot market opened, helping the rupee stay above the key 96-per-dollar level.
This intervention came at a time when market liquidity was low, potentially magnifying its impact on the currency.
The rupee's exchange rate is crucial for consumers making dollar-denominated payments, such as overseas travel, education, and international subscriptions.
A $1,000 payment would translate to ₹95,900 at an exchange rate of ₹95.90 per US dollar, while a $5,000 payment would amount to ₹4,79,500, and a $10,000 payment would cost ₹9,59,000 before any bank charges or taxes.
If the rupee weakens further to ₹96 per dollar, these payments would increase by ₹100 for every $1,000, making it more expensive for consumers.
