Rupee Flat Amid Geopolitical Uncertainty
The Indian rupee opened flat at 95.33 against the US dollar on August 4, as geopolitical uncertainty and importer demand kept the domestic currency under pressure.
A Reuters report noted that the rupee had climbed to a one-month high of 95.1175 in the previous session before retreating due to importers stepping up dollar purchases to hedge future payment obligations.
Currency traders said the rupee's recent recovery was triggered by US President Donald Trump calling off a planned military strike on Iran, raising hopes for a diplomatic resolution to the conflict and softening crude oil prices.
However, experts cautioned that the outlook remains fluid due to conflicting geopolitical headlines, keeping volatility elevated. Global factors supporting Asian currencies also include the Japanese yen strengthening to a three-month high after coordinated intervention between the US and Japan.
