Rupee's Plunge to 96: A Symptom of India's Oil Dilemma
The Indian rupee briefly touched 96.10 against the US dollar last week, causing concern among analysts and traders. This volatility is expected to continue due to oil prices, global uncertainty, and geopolitical tensions.
According to Reuters, traders expect the rupee to remain under pressure, even as the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) continues to smooth out excessive swings.
The RBI has already stepped in several times to calm markets by selling dollars through state-run banks. However, India's record foreign-exchange reserves provide a buffer against excessive volatility.
Analysts currently see the rupee trading between 95.30 and 96.00 in the near term, with 96 emerging as an important psychological barrier.
The recent tensions in West Asia and uncertainty surrounding energy supplies have kept markets nervous. India's oil challenge is no longer just about oil but also about its reliance on discounted Russian crude.
