Saudi Arabia Exits China-Led Digital Currency Platform
The withdrawal of Saudi Arabia from the China-led mBridge digital currency platform has sent shockwaves through the financial community. Analysts say the move holds greater symbolic significance than operational impact, reflecting the pressure on countries caught between US influence and alternative payment systems.
Saudi Arabia's Central Bank confirmed that it had participated in mBridge only on a limited proof-of-concept basis, successfully completing its trial on May 13 last year. However, after this initial phase, Saudi Arabia was no longer a participating member of the platform.
Matteo Giovannini, senior finance manager at the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, downplayed the move's impact, stating that it did not 'necessarily undermine the project's viability.' According to Giovannini, the withdrawal is more symbolic than operational.
