Schnabel Exits ECB for IMF Role Amid Leadership Shake-Up
Isabel Schnabel, a German official and Executive Board member at the European Central Bank (ECB), is leaving her position early to take on a senior role at the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
Schnabel will become the director of the monetary and capital markets department at the IMF, starting January 4. In a statement, she said that the new role offers an opportunity to promote global monetary and financial stability and foster international collaboration.
Her early exit adds urgency to the leadership shakeup at the ECB in 2027, when President Christine Lagarde and Chief Economist Philip Lane are also set to leave. The European Union will try to agree on all three appointments simultaneously, potentially during a December summit.
