Schnabel Leaves ECB for IMF Director Role Amid ECB Leadership Shake-Up
Isabel Schnabel will leave her position as an Executive Board member at the European Central Bank (ECB) before completing her term to take a senior role at the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
The German official has been selected as the director of the monetary and capital markets department, where she will start on January 4. Schnabel said in a letter that the new role offers an opportunity to promote global monetary and financial stability and foster international collaboration during a time of profound transformation for the global economy.
Her early exit adds urgency to the 2027 leadership shakeup at the ECB, with President Christine Lagarde and Chief Economist Philip Lane also set to go. The European Union leaders will try to agree on all three appointments at once, potentially at a summit in December.
Lagarde may be on her way out as well; she's being pursued by the World Economic Forum to head the annual Davos conference and is interested in taking over. Former Dutch and Spanish central-bank chiefs Klaas Knot and Pablo Hernandez de Cos are among the frontrunners for her job.
The IMF has undergone a personnel overhaul, bringing more women and hands-on practitioners into leadership roles. Schnabel holds a PhD in economics from the University of Mannheim and was a professor of financial economics at both the University of Bonn. She also served on the German Council of Economic Experts.
