Schnabel Quits ECB for IMF Role Amid Top-Level Reshuffle
Isabel Schnabel, a German member of the European Central Bank's (ECB) board, has resigned to take on a senior role at the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Her departure will trigger a lengthy reshuffle atop Europe's most powerful financial institution. Schnabel will leave her position effective January 3, a year before her eight-year term was set to expire.
Schnabel is currently the head of the ECB's market operations and will become the new director of the IMF's market department. This post has been vacant since August 31 after Tobias Adrian departed. The ECB stated that no cooling-off period is required, and Schnabel will not be involved in any matters related to the IMF for the remainder of her term at the ECB.
The turnover at the top of the bank is unlikely to significantly impact policy in the near term, as most of those vying for top jobs have been close to the bank for years. This includes ECB chief economist Philip Lane, who will leave next May, and ECB President Christine Lagarde, who will depart by next October at the latest.
