Schnabel to Leave ECB for IMF Role Amid Blockchain Focus
Isabel Schnabel, an Executive Board member at the European Central Bank (ECB), is poised to leave her role early due to a senior position at the International Monetary Fund (IMF). According to Reuters, citing two sources familiar with the matter, Schnabel's departure could be announced as soon as this week. The ECB has not commented on the potential move.
Schnabel, who oversees market operations at the ECB, will leave her role just past the halfway mark of her eight-year term, which runs through 2027. She is expected to take over as director of the IMF's Monetary and Capital Markets Department, a key division responsible for assessing global financial market stability.
Schnabel has been vocal about the need for central banks to adapt to emerging technologies like blockchain-based finance. As a leading hawk at the ECB, she has advocated for raising interest rates in response to inflation.
