Schnabel's Departure Marks Shift in German-ECB Relationship
Isabel Schnabel's departure from the European Central Bank (ECB) marks a significant shift in Germany's relationship with the institution. After seven years of effort to reconcile Germany's monetary conservatism with the ECB's crisis-fighting role, Schnabel will take on a new position at the International Monetary Fund.
Schnabel shared Germany's aversion to high inflation and was among the first ECB policymakers to recognize in 2022 that the surge in prices following Russia's invasion of Ukraine would prove persistent. She advocated for interest rate increases to combat this issue.
Distinguished from her predecessors, Schnabel became a leading advocate for crisis-fighting tools, including interventions in sovereign bond markets. She argued that these measures were essential to prevent financial fragmentation and protect the single currency.
