Schnabel's Exit Sparks Power Struggle at European Central Bank
Isabel Schnabel, European Central Bank board member and head of market operations, is set to announce her resignation on Thursday, September 24. According to sources, she will be joining the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Schnabel was expected to stay at the ECB until December 2027 but the IMF wanted a new director for its market department by the end of this year.
This move sets in motion a complex game of political chess, as several key positions are up for grabs. ECB chief economist Philip Lane is set to leave next May and President Christine Lagarde will depart by October at the latest. Schnabel's replacement will likely be part of a broader deal involving other powerful board seats.
Countries like Germany, Spain, France, and the Netherlands are vying for these positions, with each trying to secure their preferred candidates. The top three countries - Germany, France, and Italy - have de facto permanent seats on the board. However, any decision will involve delicate negotiations and compromises.
