Senate Republicans Rebuke Trump's Attacks on Judiciary, Federal Reserve
Republican senators have defended the Supreme Court and Federal Reserve after receiving criticism from President Trump. The president attacked the justices who ruled against his plan to require states to use special election mail envelopes with unique bar codes to screen for noncitizens voting.
The plan, which was proposed just weeks before the election, would have required states to create lists of approved voters and upload them to a new Postal Service portal. However, Justice Brett Kavanaugh wrote in a concurring opinion that attempting to rework the mail-in balloting process so close to the election would be 'arbitrary and capricious' and would not give state officials enough time to implement changes.
Republican senators like Senator John Kennedy (R-La.) and Senator John Cornyn (R-Texas) came to the defense of the justices, saying that they made the right decision. 'The president is entitled to his opinion, but I don't agree with him,' said Kennedy. 'I know every one of the justices. I think they do their very best to call it like they see it and that's their job.'
The senators also defended the Federal Reserve's decision to raise interest rates, which Trump criticized as a move to weaken the economy. 'The Fed made the right decision yesterday to unanimously raise rates,' said Senator Thom Tillis (R-N.C.). 'I thank Chairman Warsh for his leadership and displaying the independence needed to get prices under control for everyday Americans.'
