September Jobs Report Shows Slowing Hiring Trends, Higher Unemployment
The latest jobs report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics revealed that 29,000 jobs were added in September. This figure is lower than the predicted 84,000 jobs and marks a slowdown in hiring trends compared to August's 162,000 new positions.
The unemployment rate has increased slightly to 4.2%, which is within the range of 4.1% to 4.3% seen since March. The employment rates for July and August were also revised downward by 60,000 jobs.
The Federal Reserve takes note of the labor market conditions when deciding on interest rate adjustments. Although inflation rose less than expected in the Personal Consumption Expenditures report, a stronger-than-expected job growth could support another rate hike before year-end. Weaker payrolls or rising unemployment might lead to a longer pause.
