Silver Rallies to $59.81 as Oil Prices Plummet
Silver prices surged to nearly $60 an ounce on Monday as oil prices plummeted and the US dollar weakened. The precious metal climbed 2.8% to reach a price of $59.81 in early Asian trading, outperforming gold which rose by only 1.6%. The rally was driven by a reduction in geopolitical tensions following a pause in attacks between the US and Iran, which eased concerns over regional energy supplies.
The silver price has been sensitive to changes in economic sentiment due to its dual identity as both a precious metal and an industrial commodity used in solar panels, electronics, and electric vehicles. The decrease in oil prices reduced production costs for manufacturers, boosting demand for the metal. A weaker US dollar also made silver cheaper for buyers using other currencies.
However, analysts caution that the rally may not be sustainable if investors begin to reduce their exposure to commodities or if the dollar rebounds. Silver remains within a recent pattern of lower highs, and a sustained break above $60 would be needed to strengthen its recovery case.
