Singapore Market Faces Crucial Test from Fed Rate Hike

The recent rate hike by the US Federal Reserve poses a challenge for Singapore's Reits and its market revitalisation project. In contrast to 2022, when global monetary policy tightening led to a broad market sell-off, investors are bracing themselves for a potentially more persistent impact this time around.

According to Fed chairman Kevin Warsh, the rate hike was intended to 'support a timelier return' to the goal of 2% inflation. However, with inflation expectations still high and energy prices volatile, it may take sustained tightening to ensure that inflation remains under control.

The Singapore market has so far been resilient, with the STI returning 26% this year. However, the gains have been narrow, with only six constituents outperforming the benchmark index. Reits, in particular, have struggled, with most achieving negative returns or minimal gains.

As interest rates and bond yields rise, companies will face increased scrutiny and scepticism over their value unlocking initiatives. Coherent corporate strategies, disciplined execution, and proactive market engagement will become increasingly important for garnering investor attention and higher valuations.
