SNB Rates Decision Looms Amid Inflation Concerns
The Swiss National Bank (SNB) is set to make its decision on interest rates on Thursday, amidst concerns about inflation. The bank has kept rates at zero since the onset of the pandemic, but with other major central banks tightening their policies, the SNB may need to reconsider.
The franc's recent slump against both the euro and dollar has made imports more expensive, which could push up consumer prices. Inflation reached 0.8% in August, the quickest pace in nearly two years, but still within the SNB's target range of 0-2%. The government's inflation projections remain at 0.6% for both this year and next.
Some analysts believe the SNB may raise rates as early as March, while others think it will take longer. SNB Chief Economist Carlos Lenz is set to step down in October, and his replacement will be watching closely.
