SNP Warns of 'Brutal Budget' as UK Faces Rising Inflation and Energy Costs
The UK is bracing for what the SNP has described as another 'brutal budget', driven by rising inflation and energy costs. According to Dave Doogan, the SNP's Commons leader, Labour ministers are actively 'softening people up' for a budget of cuts and tax rises.
The warning comes after Prime Minister Andy Burnham admitted that the upcoming Budget next month will be 'challenging'. The UK's Consumer Prices Index (CPI) inflation reached 3.1% in August, its highest level in five months, driven by increased petrol and diesel costs.
Andrew Bailey, governor of the Bank of England, warned this week that volatile global energy prices could push inflation even higher, making it 'more likely' that interest rates will need to rise to bring inflation back down to its 2% target. Households across the nation are already facing financial strain due to increased energy bills, which will rise again in October when Ofgem's latest price cap comes into force.
The SNP argues that Scotland needs full independence from Westminster to deliver transformative change and improve living standards, citing the country's rich resources as a key factor in this plan. Dave Doogan stated that Brexit Britain is 'broken' and that people are 'sick to the back teeth of the UK's never-ending doom loop of rising prices, falling living standards, and poor economic growth'.
