Spain Aims to Bolster Ties with Canada and Boost Influence at ECB

Spanish First Vice President and Minister of Economy, Trade and Business Carlos Cuerpo has emphasized the importance of deepening economic and strategic ties between the European Union (EU) and Canada. He proposed giving a boost to areas such as trade, security, artificial intelligence, investment, and critical raw materials in an interview with Bloomberg, reported by Europa Press.

Cuerpo valued that the message both parties are sending is 'forceful' and positive, highlighting that 'if there is political will, things can become a reality.'

Regarding the relationship with China, Cuerbo has defended the need to maintain 'frank' conversations with the authorities of the Asian giant to rebalance trade exchanges and facilitate broader access for European companies to the Chinese market.

Cuerpo also emphasized that Spain aspires to play an important role in the future structure of the European Central Bank (ECB), particularly after the leadership renewal in 2027. He proposed treating negotiations as a 'global package,' not limited solely to the Presidency of the ECB.
