Spain's Candidate for ECB Presidency Gains Traction Among Euro-Area Nations
Spain's candidate for the European Central Bank (ECB) presidency is gaining traction among fellow euro-area nations, according to Spain's central bank governor José Luis Escrivá. The country is backing Pablo Hernandez de Cos, who leads the Bank for International Settlements and previously headed the Bank of Spain, as its preferred contender.
Escrivá emphasized that de Cos 'has considerable support,' while Klaas Knot, the former chief of the Dutch central bank, is widely seen as the principal challenger. The prime ministers of Spain and the Netherlands both publicly backed their preferred contenders last week on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
The succession process has been kicked into high gear by two recent developments: ECB Executive Board member Isabel Schnabel's decision to depart by early January, and Christine Lagarde's repeated hints at leaving early. These moves have hastened the race for the top job in Frankfurt and prompted ministers to act faster.
