Startale Japan launches first digital corporate bond paid in yen stablecoin
Startale Japan has launched what it claims is Japan’s first digital corporate bond that pays both interest and principal redemption in a yen-denominated stablecoin. The bond, known as Startale Bond, uses JPYSC, a trust-type stablecoin issued by SBI Shinsei Trust Bank, for all payments. This marks the first time a digital corporate bond in Japan has used a stablecoin for both scheduled interest payments and the final principal redemption.
The bond is limited to individual investors and companies in Japan and is not being offered to overseas investors. Startale Japan, a subsidiary of Singapore-based Startale Group, is the legal issuer. The issuance demonstrates how stablecoin infrastructure can integrate with traditional financial instruments, potentially opening new avenues for corporate fundraising and individual investment.
Sota Watanabe, CEO of Startale Group Pte. Ltd., highlighted the significance of the initiative, stating that it aims to create new options for corporate fundraising and individual investment. The experience gained from this bond issuance could inform future applications involving businesses, financial institutions, and tokenized assets. JPYSC, developed through a collaboration between SBI Group and Startale Group, is designed to track the Japanese yen 1:1 and qualifies as a Type 3 Electronic Payment Instrument under Japan's Payment Services Act.
The Startale Bond brings together the technology and regulatory framework supporting JPYSC in a corporate financing transaction for the first time. This could establish a model for how yen-denominated stablecoins could play a role in future capital-market activity in Japan.
