Sterling Slips as Hawkish Fed Outlook Lifts Dollar
The British Pound (GBP) has slipped against the US Dollar in recent trading sessions due to a hawkish Federal Reserve outlook. The Fed's decision to raise interest rates for the first time in three years and signal further increases has boosted the dollar's strength, pushing the GBP/USD rate down to around 1.3390.
This policy divergence between the US and UK economies has created opportunities for traders, particularly those using volatility strategies such as long straddles before major central bank meetings. The Bank of England (BoE) has also warned of upside inflation risks, with its own policymakers voting to raise interest rates to 4%.
The BoE's cautious approach has kept the Pound from surging ahead of the dollar, which is expected to continue its upward momentum due to rising rate expectations. Market odds for another US rate hike in October have increased to nearly 56.5%, up from around 42.5% last week.
This divergence between monetary policies in the US and UK has led some analysts to recommend buying short-term GBP/USD put options as a way to trade dollar strength. However, it is essential to note that using volatility strategies like long straddles can also be an effective approach to capturing profits from large price swings.
