Sterling Steadies Amid UK Retail Sales Lift and Elevated Rate Expectations
UK retail sales data released on August beat expectations, showing a 0.5% month-on-month increase in total volumes versus a forecasted -0.2%. Excluding automotive fuel, sales rose 0.6%, outdoing the consensus call of -0.2%. The stronger-than-expected data pushed market pricing for a Bank of England rate hike to as high as 90% from 83%, indicating firmer near-term tightening expectations.
The Bank Rate is currently at 3.75%, sitting near the top of the BoE's estimated neutral range of 2% to 4%. The broader economy is described as operating below capacity, while fiscal policy is expected to become more restrictive. As a result, sterling's support from stronger data may be tested if interest-rate pricing shifts in a more dovish direction.
