Sterling Surges to Two-Month High as Markets React to Burnham's Brexit Comments
The Pound to Euro exchange rate reached its highest level in two months on Thursday, October 1st, due to expectations of closer ties between the UK and the European Union. Sterling retained its recent momentum as markets digested Prime Minister Andy Burnham's comments on the UK's future relationship with the EU.
Burnham argued that Brexit had 'done more harm than good' and called for the UK to consider a range of options, including maintaining current arrangements or rejoining the EU. Although a return to the EU remains unlikely, investors see the removal of post-Brexit trade barriers as potentially beneficial for UK economic growth.
Additional support came from Bank of England policymaker Catherine Mann, whose hawkish views raised expectations of a potential interest rate hike next month. Demand for the Euro remained subdued due to strength in the US Dollar and limited its ability to recover against Sterling.
