Stocks End Volatile Week with Mixed Results Amid Higher Interest Rates
U.S. stocks ended a volatile week on September 18 largely unchanged as interest rates and Treasury yields moved higher, amidst ongoing uncertainty surrounding the Iran war's impact on crude oil prices.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by 2% for the week, while the S&P 500 was down about 0.3%. In contrast, the technology-heavy Nasdaq managed to end up 0.3% for the week.
Markets navigated another rise in Treasury yields and oil prices, with the yield on the 10-year Treasury note reaching its highest level since 2007 at above 5% on September 18. Crude oil prices also surged above $100 this week, with Brent crude near $110 a barrel before pulling back to trade around $104.
The Federal Reserve's first interest rate hike in three years contributed to the week's volatility, causing U.S. stocks to plunge on September 16 before rebounding sharply the following day.
