Europe's STOXX 600 index fell by 1.1% to 635.45 points on Friday, marking a broad-based decline led by automobile and telecom shares. The pan-European index gave up almost all its gains from the last two sessions, closing down 0.6% for the week.

The automobile sector was particularly hard hit, with Volkswagen plummeting 5.6% in its biggest one-day drop since September 2025. The company had slashed its outlook due to a €10 billion ($11.5 billion) in one-off items related to its stake in Porsche, provisions for job cuts, and a weak Chinese market.

Telecom stocks also took a hit, down 3.3% in their biggest single-day fall since April 2025. Airtel Africa led the decline among telecom companies, dropping 11.3% after Bloomberg News reported that its unit Airtel Money was considering downsizing its London IPO.

Despite oil prices paring earlier losses on Friday, energy shares still shed 0.7%, and fell 0.5% for the week. The European healthcare sector, however, was a bright spot this week, outperforming other sectors as the US Federal Reserve increased interest rates, while the Bank of England left rates unchanged but warned of further tightening.

Daniela Hathorn, a senior market analyst at Capital.com, noted that 'the focus for next week will be whether this month's rate hikes represent insurance against an energy-driven inflation shock or the beginning of a lengthy global tightening cycle'. If yields stabilise and oil prices continue to fall, equities could find some breathing room.
