Strong August Jobs Report Fuels Fed Rate Hike Speculation

The US job market showed significant growth in August, according to the Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics. Nonfarm payrolls surged by 162,000 jobs last month after an upwardly revised rise of 21,000 in July. This exceeded economists' forecasts of a 56,000 increase.

Despite this strong showing, the unemployment rate remained steady at 4.1%. The labor market momentum that had slowed down in the spring partly due to oil price shocks and supply chain strains from the US-led war with Iran has picked up pace again.

The sharp job growth has increased the likelihood of a Federal Reserve interest rate hike this month, with short-term interest-rate futures now implying about a 59% chance of an increase at the Fed's September 15-16 meeting.
