Strong Demand Shifts Focus of US Inflation Debate
Federal Reserve policymakers are weighing whether U.S. inflation has moved beyond supply shocks and tariffs to be driven by strong demand, according to Chicago Fed President Austan Goolsbee.
Goolsbee notes that July inflation came in at an estimated 3.7%, well above the Federal Reserve's 2% target, and suggests that higher interest rates may be necessary if the economy overheats.
The traditional view that supply disruptions are self-correcting is under pressure after the COVID-19 pandemic, with recent experience suggesting these disruptions are becoming more frequent and longer-lasting than previously anticipated.
Goolsbee also warns that investment tied to artificial intelligence could rise beyond what the economy can absorb, contributing to overheating risks.
