Sugar and Coffee Prices Surge on Brazilian Real's Rally
Raw sugar futures surged to their highest level since December 2024, climbing as much as 4.4% in a single day. The rally was driven by a combination of weather risks and a political surprise in Brazil. Flávio Bolsonaro's strong showing in the first round of Brazil's presidential election sent the nation's currency, the Brazilian real, soaring by up to 5% against the US dollar. Since sugar and coffee contracts are priced in dollars, a stronger real can discourage farmers from selling unless they receive more dollars in return.
Arabica coffee futures also saw a significant gain, rising as much as 3.8%. Both sugar and coffee are major exports from Brazil, the world's largest producer of these crops. The stronger local currency can create a disincentive for farmers to sell their harvests unless they are compensated with higher dollar amounts. This dynamic contributed to the sharp increase in futures prices.
