Surging Stocks as Job Losses Fuel Rate Hike Hopes

U.S. stocks surged on Wall Street Friday after employers unexpectedly cut 23,000 jobs last month, sparking hopes that interest rate hikes may be delayed. The surprise job losses were a welcome sign for investors, who had been bracing for a potential rate increase by the Federal Reserve to combat inflation.

The S&P 500 index rose 47.68 points, or 0.6 percent, to 7,757.64, topping its all-time high set just two days earlier. The Dow Jones Industrial Average also gained ground, rising 151.83 points, or 0.3 percent, to 54,036.93.

Technology stocks led the charge, with Nvidia jumping 2.3 percent and Broadcom rising 1.7 percent. The bond market reacted more strongly to the weaker job numbers, with yields on the 10-year Treasury falling to 4.64 percent from 4.67 percent just prior to the report's release.

However, some analysts warned that the weaker jobs market could make it harder for the Fed to raise interest rates without risking a recession. 'Although the stock market is likely to welcome the dovish implications of the report, investors should be wary of the future growth potential of an economy where fewer people are working,' said Peter Graf, chief investment officer at Amova Asset Management Americas.

The jobs report comes as the Fed weighs its next move on interest rates. Wall Street expects at least one rate increase by the end of the year, but expectations for a rate cut in September have decreased to 42 percent from 55 percent on Thursday.
