Swiss Central Bank Cautious on Stablecoin Impact
The Swiss National Bank is taking a cautious approach to digital stablecoins due to concerns about their impact on monetary policy and central banks. Governing board member Petra Tschudin expressed these concerns during an event in Zurich, stating that innovations like stablecoins must be carefully regulated to avoid disrupting the existing financial system.
A stablecoin is a type of cryptocurrency designed to maintain a steady value by being pegged to a stable asset, such as the dollar or gold. However, Tschudin warned that if large-scale stablecoins operate outside the central bank system, they could undermine the principle of uniform money and reduce the effectiveness of central banks' policy rate changes.
This would weaken the central bank's ability to steer borrowing costs, potentially disrupting the transmission mechanism of monetary policy. Tschudin emphasized the importance of considering the consequences of introducing new technologies like stablecoins and ensuring that they align with the central bank's mandate.
