Swiss Economy Surges 1.5% in Q2 as Industry Leads Growth

The Swiss economy has experienced a significant surge in growth, according to a recent flash estimate from SECO. The sport-event-adjusted real GDP growth rate rose from 0.4% to an estimated 1.5% quarter-over-quarter (q/q) in the second quarter of this year.

This marks the strongest quarterly expansion since 2021, and it's largely driven by the industrial sector, which made the largest contribution to growth. Specifically, chemicals and pharmaceuticals have been leading the charge, with services also expanding overall.

The Q2 flash estimate is based on incomplete early data and may be revised when full quarterly GDP data are released. However, the headline result suggests a much stronger Swiss growth backdrop than previously evident.

Moreover, this growth momentum could reduce concern that the economy is being materially constrained by current financial conditions, thereby giving the SNB less reason to respond to growth weakness.
