Swiss Franc Holds Firm Against Dollar Amid Bond Market Turmoil
The Swiss Franc (CHF) has stabilized against the US Dollar (USD), showing resilience despite recent bond market turmoil. On Monday, the USD/CHF pair traded near flat, barely affected by the global selloff in bonds that has dampened investor risk appetite. The pair had earlier bounced from a low of 0.8225 on Friday but faced resistance below the 0.8320 level, maintaining the immediate bearish trend.
US labor market data released on Friday disappointed, with Nonfarm Payrolls growing below expectations and the unemployment rate rising unexpectedly in September. This weakened hopes for a Federal Reserve (Fed) interest rate hike in October. However, the US Dollar trimmed losses on Monday as the bond selloff intensified, boosting demand for safe-haven assets.
The Swiss Franc's stability is supported by Switzerland's strong fiscal health, with public debt at just 19% of GDP. This contrasts sharply with higher debt levels in the US (127%), France (115%), and Japan (250%). The sound fiscal position offsets the adverse effects of the monetary policy divergence between the Fed and the Swiss National Bank, which had previously driven the CHF down nearly 5% against the USD over the past two months.
Technical analysis indicates that the USD/CHF pair is trading just below 0.8300, with resistance at 0.8320 keeping the bearish trend intact. Momentum indicators on the 4-hour chart are neutral-to-negative, suggesting limited upside potential. Bulls would need to push above 0.8320 to alleviate bearish pressure and aim for the 17-month high of 0.8380. On the downside, a break below 0.8280 could expose the key support level at 0.8225.
