Swiss Franc Holds Firm as USD/CHF Struggles Below 0.8320
The USD/CHF currency pair remains capped below the 0.8320 mark as the Swiss Franc (CHF) continues to hold its ground amid global debt turmoil. Despite bond market selloffs that have dampened investor risk appetite, the CHF has shown resilience, supported by Switzerland's strong fiscal health. The pair's recent recovery from Friday's low of 0.8225 has been contained by resistance around 0.8320, maintaining the immediate bearish trend.
On Friday, US labor market data disappointed as Nonfarm Payrolls fell short of expectations and the unemployment rate rose unexpectedly in September. This weakened hopes for a Federal Reserve interest rate hike in October, initially trimming the US Dollar's losses. However, the USD's recovery on Monday was limited as global bond selloffs boosted demand for safe-haven assets, keeping the CHF steady.
Switzerland's public debt stands at a mere 19% of GDP, significantly lower than ratios in the US (127%), France (115%), and Japan (250%). This fiscal strength is offsetting the adverse monetary policy divergence between the Fed and the Swiss National Bank, which had previously driven the CHF down nearly 5% against the USD over the past two months.
Technical analysis indicates that USD/CHF is trading just below 0.8300, with momentum indicators suggesting limited upside potential. Bulls need to clear the 0.8320 resistance to shift the trend, while a drop below 0.8280 could expose the key support level at 0.8225.
