Swiss Franc Surges Against Dollar on Favorable Fiscal Position
The Swiss Franc (CHF) has been gaining strength against the US Dollar (USD) despite the latter's overall firmness in the market. This unexpected development is attributed to Switzerland's sound fiscal position, which stands out among other major economies.
With government debt escalating globally, investors are demanding higher returns on government bonds. However, Switzerland's net debt of CHF 149 billion, equivalent to about 15% of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP), is relatively low compared to countries like France and Japan.
This favorable fiscal situation has offset the unfavorable monetary policy divergence that had previously negatively impacted the Swiss Franc. The Swiss National Bank (SNB) has kept interest rates steady at 0%, which, combined with moderate inflation and an uncertain economic outlook, has attracted the attention of carry traders.
Analysts at Commerzbank believe that the Swiss Franc is poised to benefit from increasing fiscal worries in the coming months. They warn that there may be periods of CHF weakness during stabilization but affirm that 'the Franc has probably reached its low point in recent weeks and will not depreciate further in the near future.'
