Swiss Inflation Hits 1% Mark as Energy Prices Soar
Inflation in Switzerland rose sharply to 1.0 percent in September, up from 0.8 percent in August, according to the Federal Statistical Office (FSO). This increase places inflation within the middle of a range of expectations set by economists, who forecasted between 0.7 and 1.2 percent.
The recent surge in energy prices is driving up costs, particularly for heating oil, gasoline, and diesel. However, prices for certain services such as package tours abroad, car rentals, and accommodations have actually decreased.
Core inflation, excluding energy, fuels, and fresh and seasonal products, rose slightly from 0.4 percent to 0.5 percent year-over-year. The Swiss National Bank considers price stability to be achieved within a range of 0 to 2 percent, which inflation remains within.
