Swiss Voters Reject Neutrality Initiative in Landslide Defeat
Swiss voters delivered a decisive verdict on Sunday, September 27, 2026, rejecting a proposal to strengthen the country's neutrality in a referendum. The measure was put forth by the far-right Swiss People's Party (SVP), led by billionaire Christoph Blocher, who spent 3.8 million Swiss francs on the campaign.
The proposed initiative would have restricted Switzerland's ability to impose sanctions on other countries, allowing such measures only if they had been approved by the United Nations. Supporters argued that this was necessary to prevent Switzerland from being drawn into global conflicts, particularly with Russia, which holds veto power as one of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council.
However, opponents claimed that this would limit Switzerland's ability to respond effectively to international crises. Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis emphasized that the country's neutrality remains intact, saying 'Switzerland was neutral yesterday, it will be neutral today and it will remain neutral.'
