ATB Financial Vice President Mark Parsons recently addressed Alberta infrastructure and energy leaders at the Alberta Industrial Heartland Association conference in Edmonton. He delivered a passionate speech that covered various economic issues, including tariffs and their impact on Canada's economy.

Parsons noted that since American President Donald Trump took office, Canada has been subjected to numerous tariffs, which have led to a surge in 30-year bond yields. The war in Iran has also contributed to high gas prices, with prices reaching over $1.80 per litre in the Edmonton area and an average of six dollars per gallon in the United States.

Parsons emphasized that Canada's economic growth is stagnant, and if productivity doesn't increase, it will negatively affect Canadians' pockets. He also acknowledged Alberta's economic strength, citing its lighter impact from tariffs and a rising population as contributing factors.

However, Parsons warned of warning signs for the provincial economy, including the upcoming referendum on separation. Businesses have expressed concern that the uncertainty surrounding the referendum is affecting their operations.
