Tax Haul Triggers Inflation Debate Ahead of Rate Hike
The Labor government's near-record tax revenue has reignited concerns about inflation ahead of an expected interest rate hike. Treasurer Jim Chalmers points to external factors, particularly the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and its impact on global oil prices.
Chalmers maintains that Australia's inflation challenge stems from high petrol prices rather than low unemployment, seeking to preemptively address the Reserve Bank's decision-making as it considers interest rates. This stance reflects an ongoing political tussle with the opposition, which has criticized the government's handling of inflation and spending.
Reserve Bank Governor Michele Bullock suggested that the unemployment rate might need to rise from 4.6% to as high as 5% to alleviate inflationary pressure. Meanwhile, bond futures indicate a strong likelihood that the Reserve Bank will increase interest rates to a 15-year high, positioning Australia's cash rate among the highest in the developed world.
