Taylor Casts Doubt on Single Rate Hike at Bank of England
Bank of England policymaker Alan Taylor has cast doubt on the practicality of raising interest rates in a single move to combat inflation, citing potential market speculation and misinterpretation of previous decisions.
In a statement, Taylor pointed out that markets had already misinterpreted the BoE's decision to hold rates steady in March as a precursor to multiple hikes this year. He suggested that implementing a single rate hike could be seen as 'off to the races', sparking further market expectations and potentially fueling unwarranted speculation.
The BoE voted 6-3 to keep rates on hold this month, with some arguing that a quarter-point rate hike would reduce the need for greater tightening later. However, Taylor does not see a compelling case to raise rates, questioning the practicality of this approach and echoing the concerns about market speculation.
