Taylor Cautions Against Rate Hikes Without Clear Inflation Spillover
Bank of England rate-setter Alan Taylor expressed skepticism about raising borrowing costs unless energy prices clearly spill over into broader, more persistent inflation across the UK economy.
Taylor spoke at the National Institute of Economic and Social Research in London on Tuesday, noting that the current environment bears little resemblance to 2022 when Russia's invasion of Ukraine sent crude prices soaring and pushed UK inflation into double digits.
He stated that unless energy prices stay elevated for a long period and there is a clearer signal that they are feeding into broader inflation persistence, 'the case for further rate hikes is not compelling to me.'
