Taylor witnesses rising cost-of-living crisis in Warragul
Angus Taylor, the federal Liberal leader, visited Warragul to witness firsthand the impact of the cost-of-living crisis on local residents. His visit coincided with inflation reaching four percent, highlighting the economic strain on households. Taylor and Member for Monash Mary Aldred toured Baw Baw Food Relief, where they observed the record demand for food assistance and the tireless efforts of volunteers.
Mark Cleeman, the community relations coordinator for Baw Baw Food Relief, shared that many volunteers take home donated apparel from the adjacent op shop due to the lack of a washing machine on site. Taylor described the situation as a 'homegrown inflation crisis,' blaming the current government's spending and business costs for exacerbating economic pressures on households. The Reserve Bank of Australia had just increased the cash rate to 4.60 percent, a 15-year high, adding to the financial burden.
During his visit, Taylor assisted in packing food boxes and spoke with volunteers about the level of donations and the average number of users relying on the charity's services. The Reserve Bank's November economic outlook indicated that cost-of-living pressures were significantly impacting real incomes and household consumption. As Taylor departed, the challenge for Baw Baw Food Relief remains to keep up with the growing number of people in need and the volunteers who support them.
