Taylor's Wage Survey Focus: BoE Policymaker Eyes January Data
Bank of England policymaker Alan Taylor emphasized that a key factor in determining whether to raise interest rates will be the outcome of an upcoming survey on wage expectations. The annual central bank survey, set to release its findings in January 2027, is crucial for assessing inflation pressures and informing monetary policy decisions.
Taylor noted that he has not yet seen compelling evidence to justify raising interest rates at the next meeting in November. However, the policymaker stressed the importance of the agents' survey on wage intentions for 2027, which will be a significant input for his thinking.
Taylor indicated that a reading below or equal to the level of the last survey (somewhat above 3%) would provide reassurance that inflation pressures are contained. The policymaker also mentioned looking at preliminary results from the survey around the time of the Bank of England's December meeting.
