Tech Stocks Rally After Fed Rate Hike, AI Sector Sees Uptick
The Federal Reserve's rate hike on September 16 had an unexpected effect on tech and semiconductor stocks, which rebounded significantly the following day.
The S&P 500 Index fell about 0.4%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 1.2%, and the Nasdaq Composite Index slipped less than 0.1% on September 16.
The next day, however, the S&P 500 Index rose 1.14%, the Nasdaq rose 1.69%, and the Dow rose 0.62%. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index gained about 3.1%, with AMD closing up about 6.4%, Micron rising 5.5%, and Nvidia gaining about 2.5%.
The pullback in oil prices and U.S. Treasury yields eased energy inflation pressures and relieved valuation pressure on high-valuation growth stocks, leading to a rebound in the AI and semiconductor sectors.
