Ten Million Europeans Weigh in on New Euro Banknote Designs
The European Central Bank (ECB) conducted a survey to gather public opinions on the design of new euro banknotes, and an impressive number of people participated. According to the ECB, almost ten million people, or 2.6% of the euro area population, shared their views on the future design of euro banknotes by completing the public survey.
The survey ran between July 23rd and September 21st, 2026, and it sought opinions on ten shortlisted design proposals based on the themes 'European culture' and 'Rivers and birds.' Two-thirds of responses came from people under the age of 35, showing strong interest among younger generations.
The results of the survey will inform the ECB Governing Council's decision on the final design concept for future euro banknotes. The chosen design will be adapted and further developed to incorporate enhanced security features and improvements in accessibility and sustainability. New banknotes should enter circulation gradually from the early 2030s, while current banknotes remain valid and continue to circulate alongside the new series.
