Tether's Surprising Dominance: Unpacking the Hidden Truth Behind Crypto Volume
In the world of cryptocurrency, one might expect Bitcoin to be the most traded asset. However, according to recent data, Tether (USDT) actually takes the top spot with a significant margin. A recent reading showed $31.4 billion of USDT changing hands against $20.3 billion of Bitcoin.
This phenomenon can be attributed to the fact that stablecoins are not assets people buy; they are the currency people use to buy other assets. As such, their volume is often inflated due to various factors, including bot traffic, internal exchange transfers, and wash trading.
Adjusted volume data, which strips out these distortions, reveals a different picture. Through the first half of 2026, adjusted stablecoin transaction volume totaled roughly $8.82 trillion, with USDC accounting for approximately 70% of this volume against USDT's 25%. This is in stark contrast to 2020, when USDT dominated at nearly 90%, and USDC was under 10%.
