The Dollar Goes On-Chain: US Leads Crypto Innovation Charge
The US is witnessing a significant shift in its regulatory approach to cryptocurrency, with regulators increasingly creating room for markets to experiment with bringing existing financial assets onto new rails. This includes generic listing standards for crypto ETFs, regulatory clarity for certain DeFi user interfaces, and a framework for tokenised securities venues.
US regulators have opened the door to innovations that the industry has spent years trying to advance. For instance, an SEC staff FAQ suggests that promoting a network's utility, continuing to build functionality, and even announcing a token buyback do not necessarily constitute essential managerial efforts that would make the token a security.
The dollar is also going on-chain, with US dollar-denominated stablecoins now circulating around the world. This has created additional demand for dollar-denominated assets, including US government debt. In contrast, Europe's approach to regulation and innovation in the crypto space appears more cautious.
