TikTok's economic impact in New Zealand has been highlighted by a new report from Infometrics, which claims that the platform contributes $1.2 billion to the local economy and supports over 9,700 jobs.

The report found that around 309,000 Kiwi businesses use TikTok each month to promote themselves and connect with customers, while an estimated 671,000 New Zealanders visit restaurants and cafes after discovering them on the platform.

The median self-reported sales uplift from TikTok activity is 20-30%, with an average uplift of 24%. The report also showed that $434 million of the GDP contribution comes directly from spending at local businesses.

Billy Olsen, Chief Executive & Principal Economist, Infometrics, said 'You don't have to have a large marketing budget or a huge follower count to get attention on TikTok.'
