Tokyo Inflation Surges, Boosting Hawkish BoJ Rate Expectations
The Tokyo Consumer Price Index (CPI) ex. Fresh Food jumped to 2.7% Year-on-Year (YoY) from 1.8% in August, exceeding market expectations.
The Tokyo CPI ex. Food and Energy accelerated at a significant pace to 3% YoY from the previous reading of 2%, indicating that inflationary pressures are building up.
The hotter-than-projected inflation data is likely to boost hawkish Bank of Japan (BoJ) interest rate expectations, with several policymakers supporting more interest rate hikes in the upcoming meetings.
According to the BoJ Summary of Opinions (SoP), some members argued for accelerating the monetary-tightening cycle to contain inflationary pressures and demonstrate the central bank's commitment to achieving price stability.
